What if standard Medicare plans aren’t enough for your healthcare needs? Medicare Advantage can fill in the gaps.

What would we do without Medicare? Millions of Americans would go without health insurance and proper medical care if it weren’t for this insurance program run by the federal government. Operated by CMS, which is the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the program supports individuals who are age 65 or older, people who receive Social Security Insurance due to a disability, or people who suffer from kidney failure and require either dialysis or a kidney transplant. It’s a benefit many seniors and people with disabilities can’t afford to live without.

But Medicare and all of its plans can be confusing, at times, and the basic plans don’t always offer everything for the needs of everyone. That’s why there’s Medicare Advantage. And you’ve come to the right place to find out what you need to know about this supplemental Medicare program.

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare comes in four primary plans:

  • Medicare Part A – this is your hospital coverage
  • Medicare Part B – this plan includes your standard health insurance coverage
  • Medicare Part C – the Medicare Advantage plan
  • Medicare Part D – the prescription drug plan

Medicare Part C is the Medicare Advantage plan. It’s an alternative to Original Medicare, which includes Parts A, B, and D. The biggest difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage is that Medicare Advantage is offered by private insurance companies to supplement the government-funded plans. These private insurance providers are approved by Medicare to offer these supplemental plans.

You don’t have to choose one or the other – you enroll in Medicare Parts A, B, and D, and Part C is optional, but goes with the other plans. You can have both the bundled plans and a Medicare supplement plan. But you can’t have Part C, or Medicare Advantage, without the bundled package of Medicare Part A, B, and D. Why would you need the Advantage plan if you have the original bundle? This supplemental program offers individuals more comprehensive Medicare coverage to meet all of their healthcare and medical needs.

What Does Medicare Advantage Cover?

Advantage Plans cover all of the same services as Original Medicare, but they can also offer additional benefits. These include benefits that are generally not covered by the hospital coverage, the medical coverage, or the prescription drug coverage. The goal of the Advantage plan is to save you money on non-covered medical expenses that you would otherwise be responsible for in out-of-pocket costs. These costs can add up over the course of your Medicare enrollment and can be especially burdensome on retirees on a fixed income. Some common extra benefits covered by this plan include:elderly woman wearing mask with nurse

  • Routine vision care, including eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses
  • Routine dental care, including cleanings, annual exams, and X-rays
  • Dental procedures, including extractions, fillings, root canals, crowns, bridges, dentures, and gum disease treatments
  • Wellness benefits such as gym memberships, nutrition programs, and fitness programs
  • Transportation to and from doctor visits for individuals who can’t or don’t drive
  • Over the counter medications
  • Adult day-care services
  • Additional inpatient days in an acute care hospital, skilled nursing facility, or psychiatric hospital
  • Routine podiatry care
  • Hearing screenings and hearing aids
  • Prescription drugs not covered by Parts B or D of your Medicare plan

One of the most significant benefits of a Medicare Advantage plan is that it can be customized to fit your needs. Benefits offered for treating specific conditions or chronic illnesses can be tailored to fit each patient’s needs under Part C. It also helps pay for some costs not covered by your Original Medicare bundle, including:

  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles
